How to Clean a Very Dirty Apartment Quickly

Steps

  1. Obtain some containers. Cardboard boxes work best - many retail stores will give you their broken down empties if you ask, and you just have to put them together with a small amount of tape. In a pinch, bags will do, but make sure that you don't mix them up with your trash bags.
    • If your room is a bedroom, make your bed. A made bed is a good surface upon which to stack boxes or clothing while you sweep the floor.
    • If your mess includes clothing or dirty dishes, it is best to pull as much of this as you can out before boxing up the rest of your mess. Put these things aside to sort or clean, or sort it and put it away if you have time.
  2. Begin putting everything in boxes. If you have more than a half an hour, you might want to do it in an organized manner, making a box for each category of item. Otherwise, throw everything into the boxes quickly, picking out trash if you can, making sure you can close each box when it is full. Label each box with its most important contents before you close it.
  3. Stack all of your boxes out of the way. Dust or clean any obviously dirty surfaces, and sweep or vacuum the floor.
  4. Put all of your boxes in some unobtrusive area (a closet is ideal), if you are having guests, or pack them up to take away if you are moving.
  5. Later after the urgency has passed you can sort out the items in your boxes. When you do this, make sure you have a few extra boxes in which to put items of different categories, and a trash can handy for any trash that may have accidentally gotten thrown in with your mess.

Tips

  • Make sure you cross out old labels on boxes, to prevent confusion.
  • Taking just a little extra time to put your mess in the boxes in an orderly fashion (stacking things neatly, etc.) pays off - you may be able to fit the same mess into a smaller space.

Warnings

  • Don't forget about the last step. You will have to rummage through them to find something eventually anyway, and the mess will slowly creep back out of the boxes.
  • Make sure that the boxes you use are big enough to contain the items you will be using them to hold, but don't use very large boxes because they can be very heavy and difficult to move when full. Use your own judgment.
